Subject: Motorway safety campaign

Dear Mr Hendry

I work for the AA as a patrol and, on occasions, I am deployed to a breakdown on a motorway. As you are more than aware, this is a highly dangerous situation, especially at night. We receive training in dealing with breakdowns on motorways and all the equipment required. Our vehicles are modern with modern lighting, brightly coloured, strobe warning lights and we have back up from colleagues and our office based staff if needed. But, disasters still happen on our motorways. Many have been killed both occupants of the breakdown vehicle and the breakdown technician included. This cannot carry on.

With the introduction of the EU Working Time Directive, driver's hours have been carefully scrutinised and implemented in an attempt to reduce driver fatigue but, accidents still happen.

I was wondering if I could ask you to raise this with the Transport Secretary as a matter of urgency and also draw your attention to the website who's link I have included? If you wish to meet me to discuss this further then I am more than happy to.

It is a simple request that we are asking. In the event of a breakdown on a motorway, drivers in the nearside lane slow down and move over to the centre lane as soon as it is safe to do so but, above all, slow their speed, place their hazard lights on briefly and then move over. The Highways Agency do have motorways covered by cameras but, their numbers are limited and can only get to a breakdown if they have enough patrols on the road. They do provide support as and when they can but, if there is not a patrol available, it is down to the breakdown technician to deal with the situation.

I thank you for your time and look forward to your reply.

  Yours Sincerely

  David Neeves

Hi Dave - I agree this is an important issue esp with the conversion of many motorway hard shoulders to driving lanes (!!!!!) The link was missing from my copy of your email - I would be interested in seeing it. We could write as a CLP to the Shadow transport minister. Thanks, Brendan
